Coming on July 9th is the Rolling Stones‘ new multimedia set, The Rolling Stones — A Bigger Bang: Live On Copacabana Beach. The double-DVD, two-CD set was captured in Brazil on February 8th, 2006 at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach in front of a reported 1.5 million people — both on land and at sea. The set, which is an expanded version of the 2007 release, is packaged in a 12-by-12, 40-page book, along with an exclusive bonus DVD including a November 2005 concert in Salt Lake City — also from the band’s tour behind A Bigger Bang.

The collection will also be issued as a triple-LP — pressed on blue, yellow, and green vinyl, along with a clear vinyl version.

Keith Richards said in the press release for the new set: Not that we’re unused to playing some of the biggest shows in the world, but I must say Rio did take the cake.”

Mick Jagger added: “It was amazing. It was a really good audience. They know how to enjoy themselves on those occasions.”

Nearly 60 years since he began performing, Mick Jagger has learned how to read an audience within minutes of hitting the stage every night: “The audience is, like, very enthusiastic, or maybe medium enthusiastic, or they seem a bit tired, or they’ve been in the heat all day. And you can tell from their reaction in the first few minutes how the audience is gonna be, and how you should approach the mood of the concert. You watch them and you listen. And also, you have to hear how the sound is. Sometimes, it’s, like, a good balance onstage — sometimes it’s not, and you have to adjust things and you tell the sound guy, ‘That’s too loud . . . that’s not loud enough.’ And how is the band playing? Are they kind of playing well straight away, or are they a little bit lackadaisical — or whatever. So, y’know, that first five minutes is really key.”

Keith Richards explained what it actually feels like hitting the stage and cranking up the Rolling Stones machine: “It’s this kaleidoscopic, sort of, mayhem. You only have — it’s no two takes in that game, y’know? You’re on stage, you’re on, you can’t stop. I think what you put it down to the incredible energy of the audience. Y’know, they overwhelmingly outnumber us, but we’re the focal point.”
