The Beatles began performing “I Saw Her Standing There” in 1962, shortly after John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote it.
McCartney is credited as the song’s primary author, though Lennon helped him finish it. The two wrote the song in McCartney’s living room in Liverpool while skipping school.
Appearing on the Beatles’ first British album, Please Please Me, “I Saw Her Standing There” was also included on the group’s first U.S. album, Introducing…The Beatles.
“I Saw Her Standing There” was released as a single in January 1964 as the B-side of “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” DJs flipped the single over and turned it into a hit in its own right, and it peaked at Number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Introducing…The Beatles spent nine weeks at Number Two on the Billboard 200, behind their second American album, Meet The Beatles, which was released in January 1964. Meet The Beatlesalso included “I Saw Her Standing There.”
“I Saw Her Standing There ” was one of six songs the Beatles performed on their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which took place on February 9th, 1964.
